Why Blog? Why Me?

Why would a commercial general contractor want to start a blog—especially a contractor in a small city like Chattanooga? And why would anyone really care to read my blog? Well, I think there is a lot to learn for anyone involved in or about to begin a commercial building project. Not only for Chattanooga contractors, but perhaps even more so for building or land owners who find themselves facing the process of selecting a contractor for what may be their one and only adventure into commercial building.

In this blog, I will attempt to provide insight to the most important person in the commercial building process: the owner. I will explore the many factors to consider in selecting a commercial general contractor for a project, and how to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each option. This insight could prove helpful not only to potential project owners in Chattanooga, but also contractors, both commercial and residential.

I plan to also examine issues in Chattanooga that affect the construction industry. Chattanooga is a dynamic city with tremendous assets. Like many other businesses, our general contracting firm, The Strauss Company, has benefited from this decade’s wave of downtown building renovation projects.  On occasion, this blog will discuss current hot-button issues impacting area contractors and building owners.

It’s time to put my 30-some-odd years of commercial construction experience in Chattanooga to a broader use. Maybe you can benefit from the many lessons I’ve learned the hard way.

There’s a line in an old Mary Chapin Carpenter song that says, “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug.” Generally, it’s better to be the windshield—perhaps I can help you avoid being the bug.
